The shape of Moose Creek Ranch was changed forever in 1972 with the birth of 1 red bull calf. He was a straight outcross, the result of two black parents. The following year, the red bull was the first to sell and the hook was set. Ray ventured all over Canada looking for the kind of cattle that he wanted his Red Angus herd to look like. That same year, 1973, Ray made his first purchase of two Red Angus bulls and turned them on to his Angus herd. In 1976, the first female purchases were made at the Millarville Breeder’s Sale. The following year another large group of females were added as well as two more herd bulls. The cowherd was expanded using the cow families from these original purchases and also the black cow herd.
     
      The cow base is bred for a short fifty-five day breading season. The use of AI and ET work are used sparingly on selected few animals. The cows are bred to calve from mid February to the end of March with the heifers starting about a week earlier. Fertility, production, easy keeping and structure soundness of both udders and feet are of the utmost importance.

      The cow herd is summered on both improved and native range, with shallow water lines to provide fresh water to the herd.
